Community gardens provide public open space in beautiful settings. They are often created on sites of demolished buildings, and create open public space where none had been previously planned.
They greatly improve the lives of surrounding city dwellers, plants and animals living and visiting, as well as the lives of participating members- providing an opportunity for direct contact with nature, in the midst of urban living.

Community gardens often profoundly change the lives of the people involved, from young children through the elderly. They also provide a wonderful venue for cultural, educational, and social events, as well as fresh produce, beauty and serenity.

Community gardens are cared for by members who are volunteers, providing the very important gift of open green space to the general public. Both of the gardens participating can be safely identified as gardens in perpetuity. The are both managed by not-for-profit organizations.

6BC Botanical Garden is part of NYC Parks and Recreation Parkland and is managed by 6BC Botanical Garden, Inc. 6/15 Green Community Garden is privately owned, currently the Trust for Public Land holds the deed, and is managed by 6/15 Green Inc.
