Godzilla's Place
Solar powered waterfalls, ponds and solar arbor,
in 6/15 Green's Memorial Garden

Godzilla
Godzilla, was a gold fish, who lived in the upper pond since the ponds were put in the ground, in spring of 2002. Her ability to adapt to the extreme living conditions imposed on her over the years inspired her name. The mysterious appearance then disappearance of a 12 inch tall plastic effigy of her namesake on top of the lower falls, inspired the naming of her environment. At various other times there had been other additions to Godzilla's Place, for example, frogs, other fish or a turtle. They all succumed to the winter, except for Godzilla. She prevailed until the summer of 2007. She had grown from 2 inches long in 2002, to 11 inches long. In summer of 2007, the waterfall pumps did not have their solar voltage converter, and they were failing frequently. It was hot, and not enough oxygen was in the pond, so Godzilla was staying near the surface.

Early one morning a raccoon (one had been spotted in a nearby backyard days before) snatched her out of the pond, took her to the clean slate floor of the arbor and began devouring her. Minutes later, a gardener discovered the half-eaten body of Godzilla on the arbor floor. She must have interrupted dinner. She buried Godzilla in her garden plot.

Godzilla suffered and enjoyed a natural death in center of a cement laden metropolis, a tribute to community gardens everywhere.

A group of school children from PS 295 heard of Godzilla's story. They named their gardening group after her, the Godzilla Gardeners. You can visit them and see their movie, by googling "godzilla gardeners".

Now, as of early May 2009, there are 10 little Godzillians each no more than 2 inches long, living in the lower pond. Come and visit. See if you can gently and sweetly call them out of hiding. They are shy.
There are 5 girls and 5 boys.
Pele carries the title "Godzilla the 2nd".
She has a light orange body, with black tipped fins.
Pele is named in honor of the Hawaiian Goddess of fire, who spews lava from the center of the earth to make her land, causing the shifting and quaking of the earth's mantle.

The other 9 fishes are as follows:
Solar Eclipse- light orange with slightly black tipped fins (a boy)
Silver Aurora - all silver (a boy) (named by Stella)
Gold Aurora - silver with an orange tint ( a girl) (named by Stella)
This, and That, and Here, and There -
4 fishes, mostly white with spots
and/or bands of orange, distant cousins of Nimo
sets of fraternal twins- each a girl and boy
and last but not least
Photon - all orange (a girl)
Volt - all orange (a boy)

These Godzillians now make their home in Godzilla's Place sharing its natural beauty, protecting it, reminding us (in the past present and future) to protect their home and our mutual environment.
They eat duck weed, the little green leaf, which grows naturally in the ponds.
These new Godzillians may become friendly to fingers lightly gracing the surface of the water and the calling of their names (but no sticks rocks or splashes please .)
In the future there may be workshops for children to observe the Godzillians and paint them so identification name plates can be made.
